Opening of the article

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome, also called Wilkie’s syndrome or cast syndrome was first described in 1861 by Von Rokitansky, who proposed that its cause was obstruction of the third part of the duodenum as a result of arteriomesenteric compression, which results in chronic, intermittent, or acute, complete or partial duodenal obstruction. Loss of retroperitoneal fatty tissue as a result of prolonged bed rest, rapid weight loss, previous abdominal surgeries or lordosis of lumbar portion of spine is believed to be the etiologic factor causing the acute angulation.
